(Reuters.) Immediately after Russian President Vladimir Putin announced war during a pre-dawn Thursday televised speech, people living near Ukraine started setting up social media networks in support of refugees.
On Friday night, more than 100,000 had joined various Facebook groups (NASDAQ:).
Tens of thousands, mostly Ukrainians, crossed into Poland and Slovakia, mainly as children and women. Russian missiles struck the capital Kyiv, and soldiers were ordered to stay.
Malgorzata Kratowska was among many Poles that joined the 3,500 member Facebook group, “Ukraine. I’m here to help you!” To advertise an unoccupied apartment in Southern Poland
She wrote that her grandmother, who was born in Moscow in 1912 and my mother told me Russian fairy tales.

Another group on Facebook, “Aid to Ukraine”, has over 104,000 members. It was created by Marta Lisowska (Polish entrepreneur).
Lisowska explained to Reuters how her mother’s suicide had motivated her to assist people and soon hoped she could welcome refugees in her home in Gdansk (on the Baltic coast).
Witold Wodzynski (her friend) and Sylwia Wodzynski manage the group. They said that Ukrainians were positively shocked by how many Polish people want to help.
According to the group’s Facebook Page, 10,000 people joined “Host a sister”, a social network that allows members to accommodate each other for no cost. It was a result of women in neighboring countries offering their homes as a way to help others.
In Poznan, 700 members of the “Kejterski Patrol”, offered assistance to fleeing dog owners by temporarily housing or walking their animals.
