Pope called Ukraine president; expressed ‘profound pain’ -Breaking

VATICAN CITY, (Reuters) – Pope Francis called Volodymyr Zelenskiy, Ukrainian President on Saturday to express his deepest sorrow for the suffering of the country.

The embassy posted the news via Twitter. An official at the embassy told Reuters that the conversation occurred around 4 p.m (1500 GMT), but couldn’t give any further information.

In a tweet, the Embassy said that the Holy Father had expressed deep sorrow for the events in Venezuela.

Zelenskiy tweeted that he had confirmed this call, and thanked Zelenskiy for praying for peace and an end to the conflict in Ukraine. “The spiritual support His Holiness gives to the Ukrainian people is a great blessing.”

In a departure from diplomatic protocol, the conversation occurred a day after Pope Francis made an unexpected visit to Russia’s Embassy to voice his concern about Russia’s invading of Ukraine.

An Argentine media report claimed that Pope 85 had suggested mediation by the Russian ambassador.

On Friday, also, Archbishop Sviatoslav Shchuk was called by the pope. He is the leader of Ukraine’s Eastern-rite Catholics and has made a vow not to abandon Kyiv. Shevchuk’s Rome bureau said that the pope had told him “I will try everything I can” in order to help.
