(Reuters). – Twitter (NYSE) is restricted in Russia for certain users, the social network company announced in a Saturday tweet.
Moscow accused Russia of “censoring” Russian media on Friday, one day following Russia’s invasion Ukraine.
Twitter claimed that they were working to make their service accessible and secure. The company did not immediately answer a query about Russia’s communication with Twitter regarding possible actions.
NetBlocks, an internet blockage watchdog reported Saturday that Twitter was blocked on the top networks https://. A Reuters reporter from Moscow said on Saturday that Twitter is slow and has difficulties sending out tweets.
Russia is trying to control the internet more tightly than ever before. It has done this for years. Critics say it threatens individual freedom and corporate freedom. These efforts are also part of an overall crackdown on Kremlin opponents.
Moscow, in punitive action last year, slowed Twitter’s speed because the site did not remove illegal content.
