(Reuters) – New York’s state governor Kathy Hochul announced Wednesday that the mandate to schools and childcare centers will be lifted. This was in response to a dramatic drop in COVID-19 case numbers.

Hochul wrote on Sunday, “It was not always easy, however, students, educators, parents took up the fight against this pandemic,” Hochul said. We reached this milestone thanks to your tireless efforts.

These new guidelines are the result of Friday’s relaxation by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in regard to indoor masking.

The CDC revised its guidance for schools to advise masking in the areas where high levels of COVID-19 are transmitted, and not universal masking.

The state health website reported that New York’s average seven-day positive test rate was 1.9%, which is a decrease from the over 20% recorded in January.
