ZURICH (Reuters), – More than 160,000 people are in danger after Russian troops invaded Ukraine last week.

According to a U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs status report, “As of 5 p.m., 26 February (U.N. Human rights office) OHCHR reports at most 240 civilian casualties including at least 64 deaths.”

They also stated that the real figures would likely be “considerably larger”.

Hundreds of thousands have been left without water or electricity due to damage to civil infrastructure. It said that hundreds of houses had been destroyed or damaged, and some towns were cut off from the markets by damage to bridges or roads.

According to the U.N. refugee Agency, more than 160,000 persons had been internally displaced while more than 116,000 were forced into fleeing neighboring countries.

OCHA stated that U.N. agencies as well as humanitarian partners were forced to cease operations because of the worsening security situation.

“The U.N., its partners and their staff continue to be present in the country. They are committed to responding to humanitarian and other protection needs as soon as the situation allows.”
