GENEVA (Reuters), – The Swiss President Ignazio Kass declared Sunday that it was likely that neutral Switzerland would join the European Union (EU), Monday’s decision to sanction Russia and freeze Russian assets in the Alpine nation.
Cassis said in an interview on French-language Swiss public TV that the Federal Council of seven members would meet on Monday to discuss the recommendations from the departments for finance and economics.
He was asked whether Switzerland, a financial hub and trading center for commodities, would be following the EU’s lead in freezing Russian assets. His answer: “It seems very probable that it will decide to do so tomorrow. However, I cannot predict decisions not made yet.”
