COPENHAGEN, (Reuters) – Lego the toymaker has urged its Russian staff not to attend demonstrations about war in Ukraine or engage in public discussions. This comes after thousands were detained by police at protests against war across Russia.

This advice was provided to protect its workers, and also highlighted the challenges for foreign businesses with Russian staff as the West becomes more hostile towards Moscow.

Lego sent an email Monday to its employees in Russia, which was seen by Reuters. It advised them that they “avoid any sensitive topics related to Russia-Ukraine or associated subjects in public as well as in social media networks and the internet generally.”

The statement stated, “Do not instigate, intentionally or unintentionally into any public demonstration or even peaceful protests.”

Over 5,500 Russians have been taken into custody at protests against war since Russia invaded Ukraine on Thursday.

This recommendation is made even though political leaders including the UK’s Prime Minister Boris Johnson and the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zeleskiy, as well as Josep Borrell (EU foreign policy chief) have asked Russian citizens to oppose the war to put pressure on their leadership.

Lego spokesmen said in an email that it had been clear from Lego that guidelines were provided only for guidance and the decision was yours.

The spokesman stated that they deeply care for their Russian colleagues and shared the recommendations of our security team to help them protect their safety.

Lego announced that in collaboration with its major shareholder Lego Foundation and Ole Kirk Foundation it would contribute 110 million Danish Crowns (or $16.60 million) for emergency relief in Ukraine.
