BRUSSELS (Reuters). During an emergency session on Tuesday, EU lawmakers will refer to Russia as a “rogue country” and call on 27 member nations of the bloc to implement tougher sanctions. The debate will take place via video link.

Following Russia’s declaration of war against Ukraine last week, unprecedented actions were taken by the European Union.

The EU’s actions include agreeing to jointly finance arms deliveries to third countries for the first-time to assist Ukraine in resisting the Russian invasion.

The assembly’s major parties backed a draft resolution that called for sanctions to be expanded and “aimed strategically at weakening Russia’s economy and industrial base,” according to the lawmakers.

The lawmakers will declare that Russia’s invasion in Ukraine has made Russia “effectively a rogue country.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin recalls “the most dreadful statements by 20th century dictators,” Zelenskiy said in the draft of the nonbinding resolution.

European Parliament leaders will be urged to take tougher action against Russian officials and oligarchs, to restrict Russian oil and gas imports, to ban Russia and Belarus completely from SWIFT, as well as to close all EU ports for Russian ships and ships heading to Russia.

According to the European Parliament, this debate will be also translated into Ukrainian and Russian.
