(Reuters) –Republican Texas Governor Greg Abbott is expected to fight off his right-leaning challengers Tuesday in order to secure a November election against Democratic ex-Congressman Beto O’Rourke. The state hosts the first presidential nominating contest for the U.S. Midterms.
The polls will be open between 7 AM MST (1400 GMT), and 7 PM MST Tuesday. Early voting data released by Texas Secretary of State showed that more than a million Republicans had registered to vote early, as opposed with approximately 627,000 Democrats. Experts believe early voting is a sign that voters are enthusiastic.
In primary elections, voters will elect their party’s nominees to the U.S. House of Representatives as well as other statewide office holders. This will be the first time that a new wave of restrictions will be applied to voting in the wake of false allegations of fraud by former President Donald Trump.
It will reveal the mood among American voters when they decide, on Nov. 8, which party controls Congress for the remainder of President Joe Biden’s four-year term.
Biden’s annual State of the Union speech to the American public, which is currently in low approval due to a significant foreign policy problem with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and facing low voter support, takes place the same day as the vote.
The midterms are usually a referendum about the president and Republicans are expected to win at least one chamber of Congress. Democrats hold the other two by narrow margins. This would enable them to stop Biden’s legislative agenda as well as launch potentially harmful investigations into his administration.
Texas Republican attorney general Ken Paxton has been elected for the third time despite an pending 2015 conviction for securities fraud. Trump has supported Paxton and he has not denied any wrongdoing.
He is opposed by the Republican firebrand Louie Gohmert (US Representative), Land Commissioner George P. Bush and his grandson, former President George H.W. Bush and Eva Guzman, former justice at the state Supreme Court.
Texas law states that if no candidate receives more than 50%, they will be sent to runoff elections on May 24, where the top two vote-getters will advance.
REJECTED: LARGE NUMBERS OF BALLOTS
Abbott and Republican lawmakers pushed for new voting restrictions in the state legislature. This was against objections from Democrats as well as civil rights groups. Election officials from several counties reported that there has been an unprecedented increase in the number of mail-in ballots rejected due to changes in identification.
Abbott’s second term has seen him adopt increasingly conservative policies, such as opposing COVID-19 and mask mandates and signing the most restrictive abortion ban in America. He also supported a Mexican border wall.
Abbott ordered state agencies to investigate medical treatment of transgender teens as child abuse last week. This was just days after Paxton gave a legal opinion. The legal impact of the order’s effect is still unclear. However, the transgender advocacy group condemned the decision as being discriminatory and potentially dangerous.
Abbott’s main opponents are former Texas Republican Party chairman Allen West, and ex-State Senator Don Huffines. Polls indicate that Abbott will avoid the runoff entirely. Trump’s endorsement was secured by the governor, who has more than $50 million in campaign funds.
James Henson of the Texas Politics Project, University of Texas said “Abbott hasn’t left much space to the right of himself for these competitors to gain any kind of traction.” “He has kept his foot on a pedal that is always in the right direction.
O’Rourke is a powerful fundraiser who has raised more than $13million since his launch in November. According to O’Rourke, he has $6.7million in reserve as of Feb. 19.
Abbott has been attacked by Democrats for the way he handled state power grid failures, including a number of severe winter storms in which hundreds were killed.
Abbott tried to link O’Rourke with national Democrats at all opportunities, including Biden. He cited statements from O’Rourke’s 2020 presidential campaign in order to paint him as too liberal for Texas.
The Republican-backed redistricting in Congress has virtually eliminated every district that is competitive, however, primaries can provide an early look at the internal dynamics of each party.
For the second time, the incumbent representative Henry Cuellar in the 28th District of south Texas will be facing progressive Jessica Cisneros.
Both could be vulnerable in November. Cuellar denies any wrongdoing, but federal investigators recently searched Cuellar’s house. Cisneros may feel vulnerable to Republican attacks because she aligns herself closely with liberals like Alexandria OcasioCortez.
Republicans are fighting their proxy war in the 8th District. The House leadership has supported Morgan Luttrell, a former Navy SEAL. Trump’s aides in Congress favor Christian Collins.
Both parties have a strong field in the 15th district. This seat is perhaps most competitive this fall after Vicente Gonzalez (an incumbent Democrat) decided to run for a different area. Republicans believe they will flip this seat in November, after Trump’s unexpectedly strong showing among Hispanic voters.
