GENEVA, (Reuters) – Canada has decided that it will refer Ukraine’s situation to the International Criminal Court (ICC), to investigate alleged war crimes by Russian forces and other crimes against humanity committed in Ukraine. This was announced Tuesday by its government.

Monday’s announcement by the ICC prosecutor was made after Russia invaded Ukraine.

Canada’s foreign minister Melanie Joly stated that they are working closely with other ICC member countries to undertake this substantial action following numerous claims of Russian forces perpetrating serious international crimes in Ukraine.

“The ICC is our complete support and confidence. We appeal to Russia for cooperation with the court.

Russia describes its actions in Ukraine as a “special operations”.

A member state can refer an investigator to speed up an investigation. The prosecutor will not have to request court approval and, according to diplomat sources, it will take months to begin an investigation.

Joly spoke with reporters in Geneva earlier after taking part to a walkout by Sergei Lavrov, Russian Foreign Minister to the U.N. Human Rights Council. He had stated that Russia would be petitioned to the ICC.
