REUTERS/Hannah McKay/LONDON, (Reuters) – British Airways’ owner IAG (LON) is evaluating all options in order to deal with a volatile environment. However, it does not require a rights issue at this time because bookings can recover.
Luis Gallego (CEO) stated that while the airline is still in recovery from the panic wrought by the pandemic, it was prudent to consider other scenarios as well and what the best ways to tackle them.
He stated that a right issue is not a possibility at the moment because of current conditions. “We see recovery and high levels of bookings.” he explained in an interview.
It is true, that our environment remains volatile and uncertain. We therefore continue to analyse the potential scenarios for the company. We always keep in mind our goal to maximize shareholder value.
When asked if the company, which has 11.7 billion euro ($13 billion) in net debt, might consider selling assets or forming partnerships with other airlines, the answer was: “We’d be negligent if not to analyze all these scenarios. The world is uncertain right now, and we must analyse all.”
He stated that IAG did not see any effect on bookings following Russia’s invasion Ukraine. The rerouting flights to India, Pakistan, Singapore and other places to avoid Russian airspace had been manageable.
Analysts from airlines have suggested that the Russian closure could slow down the opening of Asia-European routes after the pandemic. However, Gallego stated that he didn’t expect to see flights to China and Hong Kong resume soon.
