Netflix to acquire Next Games, the studio behind Stranger Things game

Netflix expands its mobile gaming efforts.

NetflixAs the streaming company pushes into gaming, Next Games has offered to purchase mobile game developer Next Games.

Next Games, a Finnish studio that developed a mobile app based on Netflix’s “Stranger Things,” is behind the game.

Netflix will pay Next Games 2.10 Euros ($2.33) per share in cash, for an estimated value of 65 million euro ($72 million), according to the companies in a Wednesday statement.

Next Games’ shares nearly doubled in Wednesday trading, close to Netflix’s offer price.

They expect to complete the transaction in the second half of 2022.

Netflix increased its gaming efforts last year. looks to expand its business beyond streaming. Company hired Mike Verdu from FacebookVice President of Games, as it builds its gaming unit.

One way companies can acquire small gaming studios is through acquisitions. SonyPlayStation, and MicrosoftXbox’s have been successful. Tencent, the Chinese internet company has been prolific in investing in and purchasing smaller mobile gaming studios. Netflix wants to emulate this strategy with hit titles and intellectual property.

Verdu stated that Next Games will be key to Netflix’s success in gaming.

He said that Next Games will join Netflix in the role of a key studio and region, expanding our game studio capabilities, in a Wednesday statement.

While we are just starting in the games industry, I believe that Next Games will help us build an impressive portfolio of games that will please our members all over the globe.

Next Games was launched in 2013, and offers a game called “Stranger Things: Puzzle tales”, which is a mobile-based role-playing game.
