(Reuters] Spotify announced on Wednesday that its Moscow office has been closed indefinitely as a result of Moscow’s “unprovoked attack against Ukraine”

Russian legislation has made it mandatory for foreign social media companies that have more than 500,000 daily visitors to establish local offices in Russia.

Only a handful of companies had complied before the March deadline. Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine last week, which Moscow calls a “special operation,” Western governments have urged companies to push back on Putin in any way possible.

Spotify stated in a statement that “our first priority has been to the safety of all our employees” and added, “We want Spotify to continue to be an important source for global and regional news at times when accessibility to information is more critical than ever.”

Spotify claimed that it had reviewed thousands of videos since the outbreak of war and has restricted access to shows operated and owned by Russian state media.

Following similar actions by Meta Platforms Inc (NASDAQ:), and Twitter (NYSE :), it removed all content of state media RT from Spotify.

Spotify stated that they would match employees’ donations two-to-1 to help local humanitarian efforts.
