WalmartThe fitting room is no longer necessary for shoppers.

They don’t have to try on clothes piles. Instead, they can use a web-based tool and an app from the retailer to help them do all the heavy lifting.

Choose My Model allows shoppers to choose a model who is similar in height, skin tone, and shape. This feature is powered by artificial intelligence and computer vision. It shows you how clothing items would fit onto a similar body.

This technology allows shoppers to visualize how clothes would look in their own homes without ever having to go into a shop.

Denise Incandela is Walmart U.S.’s executive vice president for apparel. She stated that everything comes down to giving customers the confidence to buy.

According to her, customers are more likely than ever to click “buy”, especially if they’re purchasing items that have a high price or unfamiliar brands. Walmart may also see a reduction in returns, which could be a benefit.

Before the purchase, retailers and major brands including Macy’s, Adidas, Tommy Hilfiger and Levi Zeekit technology was used.

Cheryl Ainoa (senior vice president, new businesses, emerging tech, Walmart Global Tech) stated that Walmart had begun testing the Choose My Model feature on its app and website in early 2018. Beta versions of this feature are available on selected items from Walmart’s exclusive brands such as Sofia Jeans and Scoop.

In the coming months, Walmart plans to add items of other brands — including national brands like Hanes and Levi Strauss.

Ainoa stated that customers who tried the feature provided positive feedback to Walmart. However, she wanted more models who are representative of the diverse shoppers. Walmart launched Choose My Model with 50 models, and plans to add 70 in the next few months.

Next in the technology rollout is a virtual try on feature. This will let customers upload photos of themselves to check how clothes fit and share them with their friends.

Ainoa indicated that she’s eager to find the same technology on more clothes for another purpose. According to her, she tried on 10 pairs of jeans for two hours recently.

With the Choose My Model tool, she said she could have narrowed to two pairs to try during a store visit — or skipped the trip altogether.
