NEW DELHI (Reuters] – Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:), and India’s largest retailer Future Group agreed to meet with the U.S. ecommerce giant to try to solve legal controversies that have been at the root of a fierce battle for supremacy within the nation’s large retail sector.

Amazon extended an unexpected olive branch to its customers just days after Reliance (the country’s largest conglomerate) began taking over Future’s assets. Reliance also took control of 500 of Future’s stores.

According to a witness, Amazon which was in combative mode has now entered conciliatory mode.”

Amazon has not yet responded to my request for comment.

Gopal Subramanium was a U.S. lawyer who suggested that both sides negotiate at Thursday’s Supreme Court hearing. He said the “whirlpool of disputes” that had been going on for far too long and would not let up.

Let us have at most a dialogue. This is unacceptable. Subramanium stated, “Please consider these.” “We need to agree… discuss… meet face-to-face, and explore the best possible options.”

Harish Salve, Future Group’s lawyer, agreed to negotiate. He stated that “nobody wins in this fight.” According to the judges, it would take at least 10 days for both sides to find a solution.

Amazon successfully stopped Future’s sale of $3.4 billion assets to Reliance in 2020. It accused its business partner, Reliance, of violating certain contract terms. Although Future has denied any wrongdoing of its part, the U.S.-based firm was supported by Indian courts and a Singapore arbitration.

Reliance continues to rebrand the stores despite the fact that the dispute is before the courts. Sources say Reliance took possession of prized real property last month after Future stopped making rental payments, according to sources.

Reliance’s takeover of Future Retail has caused operations to be suspended at many Future Retail locations across India.

Sources informed Reuters that Amazon planned to bring a criminal complaint against Future to prevent the transfer of assets from Reliance.

Future’s attorney Salve cited the Reuters article during the Supreme Court hearing. He sought to be sure that Amazon wouldn’t initiate any criminal proceedings in the course of the negotiations.

Subramanium responded that he wouldn’t advise Amazon to “exacerbate the situation.”

Reliance has not responded to Reuters’ request for comment.
