TOKYO, Reuters – Japan Airlines Co Ltd. and ANA Holdings Inc announced that they will cancel all European flights on Thursday due to safety concerns following Russia’s invasion in Ukraine.

These airlines normally fly to Europe from Russian airspace. They join an increasing number of other carriers who have canceled or changed routes in response to the crisis.

According to Reuters, a spokesperson from JAL said that they are monitoring the situation and have decided to cancel the flights.

According to ANA Cargo’s website, flights were suspended due to “high probability that it operations are not being able Russia to overfly Russia in the current Ukraine Situation.”

In response to Russian airline restrictions, airlines from Canada and the European Union were banned from Russian airspace. Japan has yet to make a similar announcement.

According to FlightRadar24, JAL and ANA operate approximately 60 weekly flights through Russian airspace between Tokyo-London, Paris, Frankfurt and Helsinki.

Finnair cancelled the Tokyo flight after it lost access to Russian airspace. The airline announced on Wednesday that they would restart four weekly Helsinki-Tokyo flights. This new route will allow for a 13 hour flight, an increase from the previous 9.5 hours.

Airfreight that takes longer routes will increase fuel costs. It also means that airlines can carry less cargo in tight markets for air freight. This is a result of pandemic-related problems in global supply chains.

According to FlightRadar24 monitoring by Reuters, Korean Air Lines flew over Russian airspace Thursday. However, Taiwanese airlines are currently flying above China and Central Asia and avoiding Russian airspace.
