TOKYO, Reuters – Japan’s Panasonic Corp (OTC) is interested in purchasing land in America to build a massive factory to produce a new electric vehicle (EV) for Tesla (NASDAQ.) Inc. Public broadcaster NHK reported Friday.

NHK reported that Panasonic plans to build the plant in Oklahoma or Kansas. This is because of their close proximity to Texas where Tesla has a planned new EV plant. NHK didn’t give any timeline on Panasonic’s U.S. Project.

NHK didn’t cite its source. Panasonic claimed that the plan reported was not one it had announced.

Panasonic is a trusted supplier of Tesla’s lithium-ion battery. They have already indicated plans to mass produce the new model of the battery with two new lines of production at their Wakayama plant, western Japan.

It measures 46 millimetres across and 80 millimetres thick. This battery, the 4680 format, is five times larger than any currently available to Tesla. The U.S. electric car (EV) manufacturer will therefore be able lower its production costs.

It is expected that the new powerpack will increase vehicle range.
