REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Ilustration(Reuters) – Microsoft Corp (NASDAQ) announced Friday that it had suspended all new sales in Russia of its products, making it the most Western company to disengage from Moscow following the Ukraine invasion.
Many major corporations, such as Apple Inc (NASDAQ): Nike The NYSE: and Dell Technologies (NYSE 🙂 cut all connections to Russia after the attacks. Western countries imposed tough sanctions on Moscow.
Apple announced Tuesday that it has halted product sales to Russia. Last week, Dell also made similar moves.
Brad Smith, Microsoft’s President, stated that Microsoft had stopped new sales and was also suspending certain aspects of its Russian business to comply with sanctions.
As a response to governments’ requests, and to counter the spread of Russian propaganda, technology companies have been trying to block Russian media controlled by Russia (RT and Sputnik). Russia called the actions it took in Ukraine “a special operation.”
Microsoft earlier this week announced that it had taken RT’s apps off the Windows App Store. It also banned ads on Russian state sponsored media.
Alphabet (NASDAQ) and Meta Platforms Inc are Facebook-owners. Inc’s Google, YouTube and YouTube also have measures in place to stop Russian state media from profiting from advertising on their platforms.
