WASHINGTON (Reuters] – On Friday, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration refused a General Motors Co. request (NYSE:). This would have allowed General Motors to prevent headlight glare damage on around 725,000 U.S. sports utility vehicles.

If the agency was willing to consider the problem non-sensible, GM would have not been obliged to notify the customers about the problem or provide a solution.

Detroit’s automaker claimed the issue didn’t affect vehicle safety. In 2019, NHTSA was asked to declare inconsequential the issue for GMC Terrain models from 2010-2017. GM claimed that the issue was fixed in replacement parts. It does not affect any current models.

NHTSA stated that in snow or fog, a headlight problem could create glare for motorists near it.

GM said Friday it was aware of the agency’s ruling and “will review NHTSA’s decision and explore potential next steps.”

NHTSA received a statement from GM stating that it had “only one customer”

It is unaware of any accidents or injuries and has not requested information about this condition.”
