(Reuters). Russian media claimed that a source claiming Ukraine’s closeness to developing a plutonium-based nuclear weapon was quoted by Russian media on Sunday. The source, however, did not present any evidence.

Vladimir Putin of Russia ordered an invasion against Ukraine, Feb. 24, in order to “demilitarise and “denazify” the pro-Western country and keep Kyiv out from joining NATO.

Rejecting this argument as a pretext for its actions, the West responded by imposing harsh sanctions on Moscow, and providing heavy military and other support to Kyiv.

Interfax, RIA and TASS reported Sunday that a representative from Russia’s competent body said Ukraine had been developing nuclear weapons at Chernobyl. The plant was destroyed in 2000.

According to the Ukrainian government, it has no intention of joining the nuclear club. The country had already given up its nuclear weapons after 1994’s collapse of Soviet Union.

Putin stated in an angry speech shortly before the invasion that Ukraine had used Soviet technology to make its own nuclear weapons and this was equivalent to preparing for an attack against Russia.

His claim was not supported by any evidence.
