(Reuters) – A suspect in the plot to hijack the 9/11 attacks was released by the U.S. Department of Defense on Monday. He had been held at Guantanamo for two decades.
Mohammad Mani Ahmad al-Qahtani 46 was taken to Saudi Arabia following a June review that determined that he wasn’t a serious threat to U.S. National Security.
According to the statement, “The United States values the support of Saudi Arabian and other partners in U.S. efforts for a thoughtful and comprehensive process focused on responsible reducing detainee populations and eventually closing Guantanamo Bay,”
The Defense Department maintains a Guantanamo profile of Guantanamo detainees. It states that al-Qahtani received training from al-Quaeda. He tried unsuccessfully to enter America on August 4, 2001, to participate in the September 11 attacks.
In all, 38 detainees remain at Guantanamo Bay. There are 19 detainees who are available for transfer and 7 that are eligible to be reviewed by the Periodic Review Board. Ten are also involved in the process of military commissions. Two have already been sentenced in military commissions.
