WASHINGTON (Reuters), -The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), on Monday, urged Americans not to travel from the United States to Hong Kong and New Zealand to COVID-19 affected areas.

For these three locations, the CDC raised its travel advice to “Level 4: Very High”. The CDC advises Americans not to travel to more than 135 countries or territories.

Other 33 locations are also listed by the CDC as high-risk destinations and it recommends Americans not to travel to them. On Monday, six countries were reduced to Level 3 status by the CDC: Anguilla (Cap Verde), Fiji and Mexico; Philippines, Philippines, United Arab Emirates, and Fiji. There are only 29 destinations that have “Level 2: Moderate” (or “Level 1) status.

Hong Kong recorded 25,150 coronavirus cases and 280 deaths Monday as officials struggle to control a growing COVID-19 epidemic that has ravaged hundreds of nursing homes across the country and left many elderly unvaccinated.

Although Hong Kong managed to control the virus in 2021 with great success, COVID-19 infection rates have risen dramatically in recent years and now number around 500,000. More than 2,200 Chinese-ruled residents died in two weeks.

According to data published by Our World in Data, Hong Kong had the highest number of deaths per million in the week ending March 6. The CDC elevated Hong Kong’s status to “Level 3”, last week.
