(Reuters) – California’s Air Resources Board announced Tuesday that it will significantly increase the demand for electric vehicles in the future as part of its plan to eliminate gasoline-powered light-duty vehicles from California by 2035.
Although the California regulator had stated previously that they aimed to achieve 61% zero emission vehicle (ZEV) sales in 2030, Monday’s criticism came from environmental groups.
Stanley Young, a board spokesperson, stated Tuesday that the board was “already planning” to significantly increase its proposal’s stringency.
Young said that the proposal is currently under review by staff and would allow for 68% ZEVs in new cars in 2030, 76% 2031 and 100% 2035.
