Britain impounds private jet with suspected links to Russian oligarch

LONDON — The U.K. said on Wednesday it had impounded a private jet connected to Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich under new aviation sanctions levied at the pariah state amid its ongoing invasion of Ukraine.

According to reports, the jet may be connected to Eugene Shvidler (a Soviet-born billionaire and close associate of Chelsea F.C. Abramovich is the owner of the jet, and he last week set off on a trip to accomodate his family. fire sale of his British assetsDespite increasing pressure on President Vladimir Putin’s inner circle.

Grant Shapps, British Transport Minister, stated that the plane was taken at Farnborough Airport on the outskirts London and is currently being investigated.

New sanctions will apply to the capture as part of new legislation that was passed Wednesday. These allow authorities to confiscate any Russian plane and prohibit exports to Russia of space or aviation related goods.

This includes an embargo on all aircraft operated, chartered or owned by people connected with Russia. The British Foreign Office also stated in a statement that they will have the ability to seize any aircraft belonging to persons associated with Russia.

It is also illegal for any Russian plane to land or fly in the U.K. under these measures.

The U.K. has a new jurisdiction over the jet seized, but it is unclear if the plane, which was registered in Luxembourg, is under its current oversight. The Civil Aviation Authority is working to clear up the details, however authorities stated.

Shvidler made his fortune in the Russian privatization process and has both direct connections to the Kremlin through personal and business relations with Abramovich. Abramovich has not yet been subject to any sanctions.

British Foreign Minister Liz Truss claimed that new sanctions were meant to put more economic pressure upon Putin and his allies.

Russian flagged aircraft from the U.K. will be prohibited and made it a criminal offense to fly them. It will also cause economic hardship for Russia and the Kremlin’s closest associates.” Truss said in a statement.

Insurance and reinsurance policies are also affected by the ban on exporting aviation- or space-related products. It will mean that any existing policies won’t be covered, and British-based insurance companies and reinsurers may not pay out claims for policies.
