China state-backed hackers compromised 6 US state governments: Report

The hacking groups of the Chinese government were responsible for compromising at least six U.S. governments’ computer networks between May 2021 to February 2019. researchPublication by cybersecurity firm MandiantOn Tuesday.
Mandiant claimed that APT41 was a group that exploited flaws in web apps to establish their first foothold in state government networks.
Mandiant asserts that APT41 is a state-sponsored spy agency. It exploited software flaws to quickly exploit security holes made known by researchers. According to the report, hackers also modified their tools in order to attack using different techniques.
The researchers stated, “APT41’s activity against U.S. states governments recently consists of significant New Capabilities, from new attack Vectors to postcompromise tools & techniques.”
“APT41 is able to quickly adapt its initial access methods by changing a vector or operationalizing a new vulnerability.
Mandiant, Tuesday’s researcher, is a cybersecurity firm listed by Nasdaq based in the U.S. plans to acquireCompany for approximately $5.4 billion
Others researchers include those of BlackBerry, have previously identified APT41 as “a prolific Chinese state-sponsored cyberthreat group.”Based on the research that the company published last years, this report builds upon other reports about APT41 and exposes other cyberattacks by the group.
CNBC was unable to reach the Chinese Embassy in the U.K. for comment at this time. China denies that it is involved in cyberespionage.
The U.S. Department of Justice will be closing its doors in September 2020 indictedFive Chinese nationals were identified, some of which it claimed to be part of APT41. Computer intrusions affected more than 100 companies across the U.S.
Mandiant claimed Tuesday that APT41 did not appear to be deterred by the indictment. Its goals are still “unknown.”
The overall goals of APT41 remain unknown. It is clear that they want to access government networks. This can be seen by targeting different agencies in the same state and compromising past victims. Researchers stated that they have seen them all over the place, which is alarming.
Christopher Wray was the FBI Director last month accused the Chinese governmentCyberattacks are launched by “trying” to steal information or technology.
In the last year, NATO, NATO, and the European Union were amongst other allies. blamed ChinaFor the massive cyberattack on Microsoft Exchange email servers.
Zhao Lijin is a spokesperson of China’s foreign ministry denied that China was behind the Microsoft Exchange attack.
Zhao declared in July, “China strongly opposes all forms of cyberattacks”
