(Reuters) – Discovery (NASDAQ:) Inc announced Wednesday that it would suspend broadcasts of its Russian channels and services. This follows a growing list of companies withdrawing from Russia in protest at the invasion of Ukraine.

Media Alliance, a joint venture formed with Russia’s National Media Group, distributes 15 of Discovery Entertainment brands such as HGTV and Animal Planet.

According to the company, “Discovery decided not to broadcast its channels or services in Russia,”

CNN, BBC, and other broadcasters have suspended Russia-related programming in light of a new law. This law threatens journalists with imprisonment for publishing fake news related to what the Kremlin refers as a special military operation.

National Media Group was also a partner with Netflix (NASDAQ) which launched in 2020 a local version of its service that included Russian subtitles and local movies. It also offered payment options. Netflix suspended its Russian-language service Sunday.
