VIENNA (Reuters). -Parties seeking to revive Iran’s nuclear deal scrambled Wednesday to address last-minute Russian demands. Diplomats stated that the United States appeared unwilling to talk with Russia about the matter.
On Tuesday, the West warned Russia not to renege on an agreement that was almost complete and brought the United States of America and Iran into compliance with 2015’s nuclear deal. The Iranian top negotiator, who had been in Tehran for consultations, returned Wednesday to Vienna.
Eleven months worth of talks on restoring the Iran nuclear agreement, which removed sanctions in exchange for Iran curbs on its nuclear programme, have come to an end. Several diplomats said that the nuclear agreement was finally reached.
Russia, just as all the issues were coming to an end, demanded that the United States provide written guarantees regarding the United States’ insistence on removing sanctions from Moscow over the invasion of Ukraine. This would ensure that Iran trade is not affected by the Western sanctions.
After Russian Envoy Mikhail Ulyanov spoke, one diplomat from the West said that there was still no solution to Russia’s demands. Enrique Mora, the European Union’s talks coordinator, also held talks Tuesday.
Moranov and Ulyanov again met on Wednesday.
Ulyanov stated on Twitter (NYSE 🙂 that he had met with Enrique Mora, EU Coordinator at ViennaTalks. This was in reference to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.

Although it wasn’t clear exactly what Moscow wanted, the Western diplomat stated that they were more extensive than the nuclear pledges Moscow made to revive the accord.
An European diplomat stated that Russia wanted to have broad trade guarantees between Moscow, Tehran.
They stated that talks are unlikely to be completed this week.
Mora announced that the time was right for political decisions and ended informal meetings.
The European negotiators representing France, Britain and Germany have already temporarily withdrawn from the negotiations as they felt they had reached the limit of their abilities. It was up to Iran and the United States to resolve any outstanding issues.
After Sergei Lavrov, the Russian foreign minister, made clear Moscow’s demands, Ali Bagheri Kani was unexpectedly recalled to Tehran as Iran’s chief negotiator. Iran’s foreign minister stated that Tehran will not allow its interests to be endangered by “foreign” elements.
