REUTERS/Gleb Garanich/File PhotoWASHINGTON (Reuters] – In the two weeks that have passed since Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine’s territory, more than 1 million children have fled to Ukraine and moved to other countries. The head of UNICEF’s Children’s Fund said Wednesday.
According to Catherine Russell, the Executive Director of the Center for Children’s Rights, at least 37 children were killed and 50 others injured.
Russell stated that she was horrified by reports of an attack on the children’s hospital Mariupol in Ukraine. Officials claimed that a Russian air strike had buried the patients beneath rubble, despite an agreement ceasefire.
“This attack, if confirmed, underscores the horrific toll this war is exacting on Ukraine’s children and families,” Russell said.
Volodymyr Zelenskiy, the Ukrainian President, called it an “atrocity” despite an agreement to ceasefire that would have allowed thousands of civilians in the city to flee.
Mariupol’s city council stated that the hospital was repeatedly hit by air strikes, which caused “colossal” damage. Dmitry Peskov (Kremlin spokesperson) said, “Russian forces are not allowed to fire upon civilian targets.”
Since Russian President Vladimir Putin’s February 24th invasion, more than 2,000,000 people fled Ukraine. Moscow describes the operation as a special military operation to arm its neighbour and expel leaders it considers “neo Nazis”
The majority of the people who fled were women and children. However, Kyiv ordered able-bodied men to remain home in order to protect them.
Russia was quickly placed in economic isolation by the United States, and it has drawn almost universal condemnation from around the world. On Tuesday, the United States banned Russian oil imports. Meanwhile, Western companies have begun to withdraw from Russia’s market.
