(Reuters) – The 2020 census revealed that Blacks, Latinos, and Native Americans were not counted in full. This could have an impact on political representation as well as federal funding for minorities communities.

This once-a decade national population count helps draw U.S. congressmen and senators in each state. Additionally, it is used to allocate hundreds of billions in federal funds for public housing, Medicare, highway construction, and other purposes.

To verify accuracy, Thursday’s Census Bureau report was based on statistical analyses.

The census overcounted whites for decades while undercounting those of color. But, this trend accelerated with the 2020 census.

The bureau stated that the Census count for Latinos was likely 5% higher than it was in 2010, more than three-times the estimate from the 2010 census. Blacks were excluded from the census, and Native Americans on reservation were less than 5%.

According to the Bureau, non-Hispanic Asians and whites were not counted enough.

There were many challenges to the 2020 census, such as the pandemic coronavirus, which caused the bureau’s door-to-door operation to be suspended temporarily. This may have led to some homes being less willing to talk to interviewers.

According to Demographics experts, a failure by Trump’s former president to inquire census respondents about their citizenship may have deterred Latinos populations from responding.

Timothy Kennel (assistant division chief for statistical methodologies), stated that the 2020 Census had continued to underestimate some races and ethnicities while exacerbating others. He spoke at a virtual conference. “The 2020 Census data, despite their limitations, are suitable for many purposes and decision-making.

Last year’s census data showed a nation that is becoming more diverse, with the non-Hispanic population of whites declining for the first ever time in human history.

On Thursday, the only data available was for national estimates. The summer will bring more state-level analyses.
