(Reuters) – An ex-director of San Jose State University’s sports medicine was arrested Thursday for sexually assaulting student athletes across multiple years.
A press release said that four female students at Northern California University had accused Scott Shaw 54 of inappropriate touching in medical exams. These were held under the pretext to treating injuries. He also worked as an athletic trainer for the university.
Federal prosecutors allege Shaw violated civil rights by touching athletes’ breasts, buttocks, and stomachs without consent. He also claimed that he pretended to be acting in his official duties as a California State University employee, and acted under the color of law.
Shaw will make his debut in the U.S. District Court, San Jose, on Tuesday. He will be appearing before Judge Susan van Keulen. The news release stated that Shaw faces a maximum sentence of six years imprisonment for being convicted on all charges.
Shaw’s lawyer has yet to be identified.
These charges follow high profile sexual misconduct cases against sports doctors at college campuses across the nation, including California and Michigan.
Michigan State University settled for $500 million after Larry Nassar was accused of sexually abusing hundreds of women in USA Gymnastics. After pleading guilty, he was sentenced to up to 175 year imprisonment.
In January, the University of Michigan paid $490 million to 1,050 victims to settle sexual assault claims against an ex-sports doctor. Most victims were male athletes.
University of California settled a record $852million with over 700 women who claimed that an ex-gynecologist had sexually assaulted them while they were patients. It was also accused that the school tried to hide it.
KPIX-TV reports that the scandal of sexual abuse at San Jose State University hung over campus for one year. It led to two settlements in excess of $5 million.
