FRANKFURT, Germany (Reuters) – Mercedes-Benz AG has announced plans to set up a pilot battery recycling plant in Germany. This is part of a growing trend where carmakers want to reduce the amount of raw material required for their electric cars.

Two stages will be required to construct the plant in Kuppenheim.

The company stated that a facility for mechanical dismantling would be constructed by 2023. Hydrometallurgical processing will begin after this.

Mercedes-Benz expects the plant to be able to produce more that 50,000 batteries for its new Mercedes-EQ model.

Joerg Burzer, a member of the Mercedes-Benz Board said that “with our new Kuppenheim recycling plant, we are increasing our recycling rate to over 96% and expanding our expertise in the field of battery value creation.”

Through targeted collaborative ventures in China with high tech partners in the U.S. we globalize our battery recycling strategy. This is a significant step in closing the recycling loop for e-mobility.
