(Reuters) – Five people are in critical condition after a SUV crashed into an outdoor area at a Washington restaurant on Friday. Police believe it was an accident.

Firefighters responded to the Chevy Chase Parthenon Restaurant at 12:15 p.m., where they discovered that a gray SUV had veered off the roadway and onto the restaurant’s patio. A spokesperson for D.C. Fire & EMS said.

Five out of eight victims were admitted to local hospitals in critical condition. The department stated that three other victims were also treated on the spot for minor injuries. They were then released.

It appeared that the incident was unintentional. According to a spokesperson from the Metropolitan Police Department, the driver of this SUV may have had an accident or lost control.

Police said that it was not clear if the driver sustained injuries.
