WASHINGTON, (Reuters) – The number of deportations and arrests of illegal immigrants in the United States fell in 2021 compared to 2020. However, more people were convicted in line with a shift strategy by U.S. President Joe Biden. A Friday report from an agency stated that this was due to be released.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, (NYSE:)), made approximately 74,000 arrests for immigration in the 2021 fiscal, which ended September 30. According to Reuters data, this is a decrease of 28 percent compared to previous years and the lowest number in more than a decade.

The number of ICE deportations for immigrants fell to 59,000 in 2021, compared to 186,000 in 2020. Government data shows that the 2021 number was the lowest recorded since 1995.

In fiscal 2021, 12,000 of those who were arrested were found guilty of “aggravated felonies,” which include both violent crimes and also nonviolent misdemeanors.

Biden’s Democratic White House made it clear that they would prioritize arresting more serious offenders than ever before and lessen enforcement against those who are not criminals, as opposed to Trump, a Republican.

According to a similar news release, Tae John Johnson, Acting Director of ICE said that ICE special agents and officers focused their attention on the cases that had the most impact on law enforcement in the communities. This was in line with what the data from the annual report shows.

Biden was hit hard by the unexpected delay in the U.S. Senate vote to approve Harris County, Texas Sheriff Ed Gonzalez as the nominee for the presidency.

After Republican Senator James Lankford expressed concern over an allegation about domestic abuse Gonzalez denied, the delay was caused.
