Moderna Jumps as Trial for Experimental HIV Vaccine Begins -Breaking

Investing.com — Moderna Inc (NASDAQ:) has dosed the first participant in a clinical trial of an experimental human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) trimer mRNA vaccine, the company said Monday. 

Moderna shares rose by 17% following the announcement.

Moderna stated in a press release, that Phase 1, an open-label multicenter randomized trial, is being conducted to evaluate the safety and immunogenicity experimental HIV trimer vaccines.

According to the company, these mRNA vaccines are safe for HIV-uninfected people and produce neutralizing antibodies.

About 100 HIV-negative people aged between 18 and 55 will be enrolled in the trial sponsored and funded at the National Institutes of Health by the Division of AIDS.

The development of a vaccine program that causes sustained protection against HIV in human beings has proved difficult. Moderna president Stephen Hoge said that Moderna believes that mRNA is a way to tackle this problem.
