(Reuters] – Elvira Nabiullina, Russian central bank governor, won’t answer questions from journalists following an explanation of this month’s monetary policies in an online presentation. This was made Monday by the bank.

Nabiullina holds an annual news conference in Russian or English, after which the bank makes its interest rate announcements. However, she didn’t do this when the key rate had been more than doubled as a result of an emergency move on February 28.

After the invasion of Ukraine, sanctions imposed by Western countries against Russia led to a 20% increase in the price of the ruble.

Other measures were also taken, including capital controls and an order to export-oriented companies to sell 80% foreign currency revenue.

Nabiullina gave a speech explaining the movements in an internet broadcast.

The Ukraine conflict has prompted the central bank to not update its inflation forecasts and growth projections.

Moscow refers to its actions against Ukraine as “special operation” in order demilitarize and “denazify its neighbor. Allies of the West and Ukraine call it a false pretext for war.

The central bank requested an independent survey from analysts last week. It forecasted inflation at 20% and a 8% contraction in the economy this year. They also predicted that the key interest rate will average 18.9% by 2022.

Nabiullina, age 58, is currently the head of the central banking institution. He was elected in 2013 one year prior to Russia’s annexation of Crimea. It triggered the first wave west sanctions.

The current term of her is up on June 24, and President Vladimir Putin has to nominate Nabiullina or suggest another candidate for the lower house by March 24.

At 1030 GMT, the central banks will publish its monthly key rate statement. Nabiullina is expected to follow at 1200 GMT.
