(Reuters) – The pandemic-driven shift towards online shopping has led to a record amount of U.S. consumer spending in e-commerce this year, according to a report by Adobe Analytics (NASDAQ:).

This forecast is 13% higher than 2021. It follows $1.7 trillion in total spending over two years during the COVID-19 crises, which began March 2020.

The pandemic was an important moment in e-commerce. According to Vivek Paandya (lead analyst at Adobe Digital Insights), it not only increased growth by about two years, but it also had an impact on the kinds of goods people are more willing to purchase online.”

Online groceries spending soared in times of health crisis. It rose 7.2% in 2017 after almost doubling its 2020 level.

This is in comparison to the modest growth of apparel sales, but electronics has remained at the top of online shopping.

Patrick Brown (Vice President of Growth Marketing and Insights at Adobe) stated that “E-commerce will be reshaped” by grocery shopping.

In addition to signs of strong consumer demand, the forecast for 2022 also supports this prediction. Prices for snacks and sweatshirts have risen in recent years.

Adobe reported that after accounting for $32billion of online sales in 2017, inflation will account for $27billion in online spending. It analyzes more than one trillion visits to U.S. retailers websites.
