(Reuters] – Friday’s announcement by the Biden administration was that oil and gas development will be resumed on federal lands. This is following a temporary restoration of a measure designed to consider global warming costs into federal decision making.

This announcement is made a month following the Interior Department’s decision to delay federal oil and natural gas lease sales. A Louisiana federal judge had stopped the Interior Department from using the “social cost” value of carbon to account for climate risk in decisions about permitting, investments and regulatory matters.

A federal appeals court had granted temporary approval to the government for the use of the value.

“With this ruling, the department continues its planning for responsible oil and gas development on America’s public lands and waters,” Interior spokesperson Melissa Schwartz said in an emailed statement. The Interior spokesperson Melissa Schwartz declined to comment on whether or not the Administration would resume the auction of oil-and gas leases.

Interior’s Bureau of Land Management was already preparing for lease sales to be held in various Western states before the February ruling.
