LVIV, Ukraine (Reuters). Several residents of Mariupol in Ukraine have resorted on foot to flee the blockade as the official evacuation plans have mostly failed, said the Governor of the region.
Local authorities estimate that over 400,000 people remain trapped in the port city’s strategic port for more than two weeks. They are sheltering from bombardment, which has disrupted central power supplies, heating, and water.
Russia denied targeting civilians or bombing residential areas.
Pavlo Kyrylenko, governor of Donetsk Region, stated that around 35,000 people had left the city over recent days. Many were walking or riding in private vehicles.
Kyrylenko stated that “the way out of Mariupol is by residents walking or using their own transportation.” He also said that many cars are leaving the area without sufficient fuel for transport to get to nearby villages and towns.
He claimed that the authorities were unable to open humanitarian corridors in order to provide food, aid, and shelter to the city as well as to evacuate the children and women most in dire need.
Russia and Ukraine traded accusations for the collapse of the corridors.
Mariupol had been warned by the city council that its supplies of food and water were running low. The council also said that they are unable or unwilling to adequately treat injuries sustained in shelling. Over 2,500 civilians have been killed since Feb. 24, according to the Ukrainian authorities.
