REUTERS/Lisi Niesner/File PhotoFRANKFURT (Reuters – Germany’s financial minister called for renewed talks about a free trade arrangement between the European Union & the United States. This was a report in Sunday’s newspaper. It is hoped to resume discussions that had been halted under former U.S. President Donald Trump.
Trump ended the negotiations on the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership, and instead waged a series of trade disputes against the EU.
“We need to resume negotiations for a transatlantic free trade accord. It is clear, especially now with the (Ukraine] crise, how crucial free trade is with other partners around the planet who share our value,” Christian Lindner told Handelsblatt. He is the European finance minister for the largest economy.
Uncertain if there are any European support for such talks. Some officials in recent years have spoken out for a resumption while others are more skeptical.
The U.S. Embassy in Berlin and Germany’s Finance Ministry didn’t respond immediately to our requests for comment.
