WASHINGTON (Reuters] – A U.S. Congress probe into the January 6, 2021 assault on Capitol Hill will uncover more details and could recommend additional criminal penalties to officials who don’t uphold their responsibilities, Rep Liz Cheney stated on Sunday.

Cheney stated that there will be “legislative recommendations” and “certainly will be information.”

Cheney, one of the two Republicans who make up the U.S. House of Representatives’ select committee of nine members. It has held closed-door sessions for the past few months to interview witnesses regarding events that led up and followed the attack on Trump supporters.

It is anticipated that the committee will hold public hearings in the spring. Cheney indicated that the top priority of the committee will be to make recommendations.

Cheney said that such penalties would target “the type of supreme dereliction or duty you saw in former President Trump’s refusal to tell the mob that they should go home following his attack on Capitol.”

Cheney said to NBC her concern about the day’s events has been raised by her participation on the committee.

She stated that she has not learnt a single thing in her time on the committee.

Trump supporters stormed Capitol and fought with police, sending legislators running for their lives. Trump made a fiery speech close to the White House repeating his lies about his defeat.

This claim has been rejected by multiple courts and state election officials, as well as Trump administration members.

Trump was openly flirting about the possibility of running for president again in 2024, according to a number of rallies.

Cheney and Adam Kinzinger (who also serve on the special commission) were two of the 10 Republicans that voted to impeach Trump early last year for their roles in the Jan. 6, attack.

On Jan. 6, a police officer fighting the rioters died. The Capitol was also attacked by rioters the next day. A further four officers who defended the Capitol were later killed in suicide. The four victims of the riots also lost their lives, with one woman being shot in the head by a cop while she tried to climb out of a broken window. The hours-long attack left 140 injured police officers.
