LONDON (Reuters), Police began interviewing witnesses to investigate alleged breaches in lockdown rules at events held in Boris Johnson’s home and office, according to the Metropolitan Police on Monday.

After an internal investigation found Johnson’s staff enjoyed alcohol-fuelled parties at Downing Street, police are now investigating 12 events. The British leader was present at a handful of these gatherings.

The Met released a statement saying that investigators investigating claims of violations of Covid-19 regulations at Downing Street or Whitehall have started to interview witnesses as part of ongoing inquiries.

According to the police, over 100 questionnaires have been distributed as part of this investigation. The initial answers helped identify additional individuals.

Johnson was one of those who received questionnaires about the events. This took place during a time when many could not attend funerals and say goodbye to their loved ones in hospitals due to COVID-19 restrictions.

These revelations caused widespread outrage, with some members of the prime minister’s party joining the opposition to call for his resignation.

As the attention has been drawn to Russia’s invading of Ukraine, others, including Douglas Ross from the Conservative Party, have said that they are withdrawing their call and insist on war.

According to the police, it has not yet sent any persons for fixed penalty notices. These would be given to those who are found to have violated COVID regulations.

Although it stated that the investigation was moving quickly, they did not provide any timeframe.
