BEIJING, (Reuters) – A passenger plane of China Eastern Airlines (NYSE) en route from Kunming to Guangzhou (Guangzhou) crashed on Monday in subtropical mountains in southern China. It was the first major commercial aircraft crash in China since 2010. [L2N2VO0CL]

Here are the top four notable commercial aircraft crashes in China during the last 40 years, as reported by the Aviation Safety Network and CCAonline.cn.

2010. An Embraer E-190 regional plane flown by Henan Airlines crashed at low visibility on approach to Yichun Airport, killing 44 out of 96 passengers.

2004 – A China Eastern plane collided with a North Chinese airport on November 21, just minutes after its takeoff. It killed 55.

2002 – On May 7, 2002, a plane belonging to China Northern Airlines carrying 112 passengers crashed into the water off Dalian’s northeast coast. No survivors were found.

2000 – A passenger flight of Wuhan Airlines was hit by lightning, and burst in midair. The plane crashed into central China on June 22nd killing at most 42 passengers.

1999 – On February 24, China Southwest Airlines’ (NYSE:) 4509 flight from Chengdu To Wenzhou crashed mid-air into Wenzhou killing all 61 onboard.

1997 – China Southern Airlines Flight 3456 was a Boeing (NYSE 🙂 737 that crashed in Shenzhen under bad weather. It killed 35 of the 74 passengers.

1994 – China Northwest Airlines Flight 2303, from Xian towards Guangzhou, crashed and killed all 160 onboard.

1993 – 12 people died when the China Northern Airlines flight crashed while it was preparing to land in Western China.

1993 – 55 people were killed when a China Northwest Airlines plane crashed into a lake on July 23rd after it failed to take off from Yinchuan Airport.

1992 – A China Southern Airlines Flight crashed at Guilin Airport on Nov. 24, killing 141 passengers.

1988 – 46 people died when the Shanxi Airlines plane crashed into Linfen, Shanxi province.

1988 – A China Southwest Airlines flight crashed at Chongqing in Southwest China on January 18, killing 108 passengers.

1985 – An aircraft of China Civil Aviation carrying 41 persons crashed upon landing in Jinan (Eastern Province) on January 18, 1985. 38 people were killed.

1982 – A passenger plane of China Civil Aviation crashed into Guangxi on April 26, 1982. 112.
