WASHINGTON, (Reuters) – U.S. Senate Republican hopeful Mo Brooks promised Monday to “fire” Mitch McConnell. This was a video that was released just days after Trump said in an interview that he would withdraw his endorsement for Brooks.

“Today I am revealing my promise to America: to fire Mitch McConnell. Brooks stated in the digital advertisement of 90 seconds that he will not vote to elect Mitch McConnell as Senate leader if he is elected.

“America can’t afford a Senate leader who is a weak-kneed, debt-junkie, open-border RINO Republican, and who – worse yet – sells out America for special interest group cash,” Brooks said, using one of Trump’s favorite slurs for those in his party he disagrees with, which stands for “Republican in name only.”

Brooks also encouraged fellow Republican Senate Candidates across the nation to do the same, warning McConnell was locked in a “war for the heart and Soul of the Republican Party.”

Brooks is the third Senate Republican candidate to challenge McConnell’s leadership. He follows Kelly Tshibaka, Alaska, and Eric Greitens, Missouri.

McConnell is an 80-year old Kentucky Republican and Trump’s favorite target. He has demanded his removal as Senate party leader. This was in a constant war of words, as Republicans attempt to regain the Senate majority.

McConnell spokesmen did not immediately comment on Brooks’ video.

Brooks is currently in the tight race against three other candidates to succeed Richard Shelby (Senate Republican). In the May 24 party primary, Brooks will face Katie Britt, an ex-Silver aide, as well as Michael Durant who is a businessman, but a former Army helicopter pilot.

Brooks, who was an early front-runner after Trump’s endorsement last year, has fallen in polls. He trails his competitors in fundraising.

Trump has falsely claimed that 2020’s election was stolen from his. He also expressed dismay that Brooks had told voters it was time for them to look ahead to 2020. Last week, the former president said to Washington Examiner that he was open to changing his endorsement.

Britt and Durant campaign did not respond immediately to questions regarding the Brooks video.
