© Reuters (Reuters) – MacKenzie Scott is a multibillionaire philanthropist who donated $436 Million to Habitat for Humanity. This money will be used to boost Black homeownership and affordability.
Habitat for Humanity International (and its affiliates) will share the donation, the latest of a string that Scott has made totaling almost $9 billion over the past year.
It will be used to accelerate Habitat for Humanity’s efforts to promote homeownership in Black and minority communities, Natosha Reid Rice, Habitat’s chief global diversity, equity and inclusion officer, said in a press release.
She said, “We are looking forward to gathering diverse groups of people to concentrate on the ways that we can address systemic racism in the housing industry that continues to limit access and hurt people of color.”
According to her, some funds will be used by the charity’s volunteers base.
The gift was sent in February, and the recipients were free to make their announcement. Scott’s representative could not reach Scott for comment.
Habitat for Humanity stated that $25 million will be used to increase the supply of affordable housing and lobby for favorable legislation. Additionally, it launched a summer initiative to eliminate systemic barriers for homeownership. Other funds, according to Habitat for Humanity, will be disbursed to Habitat affiliates across dozens of States via grants.
Scott was not able to post Medium posts about her gift, unlike her previous donations. She stated on Medium in 2019 that she was going to give away most of her wealth.
After donating $4 billion to diverse causes and $1.7 million to 300 other organizations in 2020, she donated $2.7 billion last year.
Scott is married to Dan Jewett who is a Seattle science teacher. She received a 4% share in Amazon after her divorce.
Forbes reported that she was valued at $49 billion on Tuesday.
