NEW YORK, (Reuters) – A Marilyn Monroe portrait by Andy Warhol, 1960s pop idol, will be up for sale in May. It is estimated to fetch $200 million. This would make it a new record. Christie’s made the announcement on Monday.

Alex Rotter of Christie’s 20th- and 21st Century art, said that the “Shot Sage Blue Marilyn” work is “possible to be the most costly painting in the 20th century sold at auction.”

Warhol created five images of Monroe in 1964, including one that shows him as Monroe, with his face screenprinted with brightly colored hair, light blue eyes and pink cheeks.

Warhol said that he used a screening method on the paintings and on the painting. This technique he would never use again. Rotter said that it was too complex and too difficult.

This work is provided by the Thomas and Doris Ammann Foundation, Zurich. Fundraising efforts for the foundation are ongoing to make a difference in the lives and well-being of children all over the globe.

Marc Porter, Christie’s American Chairman stated that “the sale of one painting will represent the highest grossing auction for philanthropic purposes since the collection from Peggy and David Rockefeller” in 2018.

Christie’s claims that Warhol’s painting, “Silver Car Crash” (Double Disaster) was the most expensive. It sold for $105 Million in 2013.
