NEW ORLEANS, (Reuters) – Crews were evaluating the extent of the destruction on Wednesday at the East Side of New Orleans. The tornado caused damage of two miles and left eight people injured.

The dark funnel cloud, which was forming at 7:30 pm Tuesday (0030 GMT Wednesday), flipped vehicles and flattened buildings in the Arabi section of St. Bernard Parish.

According to a spokesperson from the parish located just east of New Orleans downtown, first responders found a 26year-old man deceased near his house. John Lane, the parish spokesperson, said eight more people were treated for minor injuries at a local hospital.

“Everybody knows where they are,” he stated. He also said that the search and rescue teams had completed most of their work.

Meteorologists from the National Weather Service who were assessing the damage Wednesday said that the tornado had at most an EF3 according to the five-point Enhanced Fujita Scale. It produced winds between 136 and 165 mph (two hundred to two thousand kph)

Many parts of southern Louisiana are still reeling from Hurricane Ida last August, which was a severe Category 4 hurricane that destroyed rural areas to the south and left more than 100 dead in many states of the United States and the Caribbean.

Local media reported that the Biden administration announced Tuesday it would allocate more than $1.7 Billion to Louisiana in response to the two most destructive hurricane seasons.

New Orleans has a large Black population and is still traumatized from Hurricane Katrina 2005 which was one of the strongest storms to hit America. At least 1,800 people died.

Lane claimed that local officials and crews were moving block-to-block to evaluate the damages left by the tornado. It appeared to have followed a straight line for around 2 miles (3 km)

He said, “The storm’s path – it was devastation.” “It did major destruction. The houses were thrown off their foundations, and onto the streets.

Mayor Latoya Catrell reported that Orleans Parish was spared by the tornado, as well as the City of New Orleans west. No injuries were reported or any significant damage occurred.

Cantrell stated that she declared a “state of emergency” out of caution and in order to allow New Orleans to access any future federal resources.

ONCE HOMES, NOW RUBBLE

While residents sorted through the rubble, and climbed up to piles of rubble where they used to live and work, utility crews were busy repairing power lines that ran along streets.

According to WDSU, “It sounded like a train” and “”I just said, “No,”” a woman stated. “I thought that I would die.”

Entergy (NYSE : ), the local electricity company reported that approximately 2300 houses and businesses in St. Bernard Parish, and 700 customers from Orleans Parish, were without power Wednesday afternoon.

This storm front, which produced Tuesday’s tornado, also brought rain and wind to parts of Louisiana and Mississippi as well as Alabama. The tornado struck just a day after the twisters that decimated homes in other parts of the region and left many people injured.

It moved eastward and produced strong thunderstorms on Wednesday along Florida’s Panhandle. The National Weather Service stated that it could possibly bring hail, tornados, and damaging winds to the area all day.

Andy Haner, a meteorologist for the weather service said that severe weather is possible as “the action moves east today.” The storm system has been reduced in size.
