New Hampshire’s city of Portsmouth is set to soon let residents pay their bills using cryptocurrencies and other digital assets.

Deaglan McEachern, the city mayor explained that City Hall had been studying blockchain and cryptocurrency and was ready to use them for improved services. The mayor was quoted by Seacoastonline on March 23 as saying, “There are waves of new stuff that will affect our future in terms of what technology uses in cryptocurrency.” He also said:

It’s already impacting Portsmouth and I don’t want it to wait.

Although it plans to accept cryptocurrency payment, Portsmouth does not appear to be purchasing or storing digital assets. McEachern mentioned that payments in cryptocurrencies would immediately be converted into US dollars to avoid any impact on the city’s monetary practices that may stem from the market’s volatility.

El Salvador is the most active government to have taken an interest in cryptocurrency. This Central American country was praised for its pro-Bitcoin actions throughout the year.

El Salvador became the first country in the world to accept Bitcoin legal tender. The government started buying Bitcoin a few months later and was actively increasing its cryptocurrency stash after the crash.

In the meantime, in America, both the New York and Miami mayors have joined a friendly competition for cryptocurrency adoption. Both leaders accepted to get their salary in Bitcoin.
