U.N. General Assembly again overwhelmingly isolates Russia over Ukraine -Breaking

UNITED NATIONS – Nearly three-quarters (Reuters) of the U.N. General Assembly demanded humanitarian access for Ukraine on Thursday. The General Assembly also criticized Russia’s creation of a “dire” humanitarian crisis after Moscow invaded Ukraine one month earlier.

The 193 member General Assembly has now isolated Russia for the second time over what Moscow called a “specially military operation” which it claims is designed to degrade Ukraine’s military infrastructure. Antonio Guterres (U.N. SecretaryGeneral) has criticised Russia’s “absurd” war.

Ukraine and its allies drafted the Thursday resolution. It received 140 votes and five votes respectively – Russia and Syria, North Koreans, Eritrea and Belarus. 38 countries, such as China, abstained.

Ukraine and its allies wanted to improve or match support for the March 2 General Assembly resolution, which deplored Russia’s “aggression” and demanded that it withdraw its forces. It received 141 votes in favor, five more no votes and 35 other states, including China, abstained.

U.S. The U.S. Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield, United Nations Ambassador, described Thursday’s vote as an “astonishing success,” and told reporters that there was no difference in votes between 140 and 141.

South Africa offered a different draft resolution, which focused only on Russia’s humanitarian situation. Russia asked for support from countries, saying that Ukraine and its allies had “politicized the text.”

The General Assembly decided to not act on South Africa’s draft following Ukraine. This vote was under a rule that relates to draft resolutions made before the body on this issue.

Thursday’s resolution demands protection for civilians and medical staff, as well as aid workers, journalists, hospitals, and any other civil infrastructure. This resolution demands that Mariupol be freed from the siege.

The West and Ukraine have both accused Moscow of targeting civilians in indiscriminate attacks. Moscow refutes the accusations of attacking civilians.

This resolution reiterates the text of March 2, General Assembly, by calling on Moscow to cease fighting in Ukraine and pull its troops out.
