Gopuff partners with Morrisons in UK for speedy grocery delivery

Morrisons and Gopuff are teaming up to provide quick grocery delivery in more than 20 U.K. cities.

LONDON — American instant delivery start-up Gopuff said Friday it has partnered with British grocery chain Morrisons to deliver items to people’s doors in a matter of minutes.

Gopuff will now be able sell Morrisons products via its app in more then 20 U.K. locations. Morrisons will act wholesaler for Gopuff. Gopuff delivers essential goods through a network known as dark shops.

Morrisons chief executive David Potts stated in a statement that the partnership would allow them to quickly deliver fresh Morrisons food products and customers favourites directly to doorsteps across the U.K.

Gopuff is the first European retailer to tie up with Gopuff. According to the company, it does not have similar agreements in America.

The fast grocery craze has swept the U.S. and various parts of Europe, with several start-ups including Getir, Gorillas and Jokr now offering deliveries in as little as 10 minutes.

British food delivery service launched September DeliverooLaunched its own rapid grocery delivery serviceHop, which Morrisons sells, is also available. Hop is available only in London at the moment.

Consolidation is beginning to occur in the fast grocery delivery industry. Gopuff was launched recently in France and the U.K. after it acquired fast delivery startup Dija and Fancy. Istanbul-based Getir, meanwhile, acquired British rival Weezy.

Gopuff has received $3.4 billion from investors to date. SoftBankThe deal, according to the spokesperson for the firm, would increase its expansion in the U.K.

Yakir Gola, CEO of Gopuff and cofounder said that Gopuff is proud to be a partner with “one of the most loved brands in the UK” as they continue expanding Gopuff’s product offerings and presence.

Morrisons is at the moment undergoing a sale to U.S. private equity firm Clayton, Dubilier and Rice (CD&R) for $10 billion.

Britain’s competition watchdog is scheduled to meet Thursday saidThe U.K. government is worried that the merger might increase fuel prices and threatens to initiate an inquiry into the deal.

Gopuff, a CNBC Disruptor 50 winner twice over, most recently ranked No. 36 on the 2021 list. In May will be announced the Disruptor 50 10th anniversary list.
