On Saturday, Jeff Fortenberry (Republican U.S. Representative) resigned after being convicted by a California jury of lying about a campaign donation from an alien national.

Fortenberry wrote to the House announcing his resignation from Congress on March 31st.

Fortenberry announced his resignation after being under intense pressure by Washington politicians and leaders from Nebraska. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and House Minority leader Kevin McCarthy called for Fortenberry’s resignation on Friday. Nebraska Republican Gov. Pete Ricketts suggested that Fortenberry “do the right things for his constituents” by stepping down from the office he holds since 2005.

State Sen. Mike Flood will be the next GOP nominee after Fortenberry withdraws from the primary. Former speaker of Nebraska’s Legislature has received endorsements by Ricketts as well as former Governor. Dave Heineman holds a significant advantage in Republican-leaning 1st Congressional District. Patty Pansing Brooks from Lincoln is also running.

Pansing Brooks claimed Fortenberry’s conviction was a “wake up call” to the district that it needs change.

Fortenberry will receive his sentence on June 28.
